SAXMUNDHAM & DISTRICT CHESS CLUB

Secretary's Report: Season 1993 – 1994

Saxmundham Chess Club has had another eventful and successful year. Membership reached record levels and it has been possible, for the first time in 13 years, to field a third team in the Suffolk League.

In the National Major Knockout Competition, Saxmundham reached the third round for the first time. Playing away to the D.H.S.S., Saxmundham won 3–2, received a bye in round two and lost 2–3 to Ilford in round three.

Saxmundham ‘A’ Team finished 7th in the Suffolk League Division One, with 25 points. There were 5 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses from the 13 games and relegation seemed less of a threat than for some time back.

Half a point made all the difference between the ‘B’ and ‘C’ Teams in Division Three. The ‘B’ Team finished in the middle of the table with 21 points from 3 wins, 3 draws and 6 losses. Saxmundham ‘C’ Team, however, had 20½ points and finished bottom, despite having 4 wins, 4 draws and only 4 losses.

In the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup, Stowmarket put Saxmundham out in round one, winning 4–2.

The Club Championship will be decided in a match between John Feavyour and Mike Bone. The All–Play–All Competition was won jointly by Mike Schofield and Hugo Brown.
