SAXMUNDHAM & DISTRICT CHESS CLUB

Secretary's Report: Season 2007 – 2008

This season (2007 – 2008) the Suffolk Chess League consisted of three divisions and the club entered two teams into the league (one in Division 2 and one in Division 3); these teams were under the captaincy of Andrew Paige and Arthur McCormick.

The ‘A’ Team (under the captaincy of Andrew Paige) was playing in Division 2. There were 6 teams in this division and consequently there were a total of 10 matches to be played during the course of the season. Of these: 5 matches were won, 2 matches were drawn and 3 matches were lost. The team finished the season near the top of the division with a total of 22 points out of a possible maximum of 40 points. The division was won this year by Adastral Park ‘A’, who finished the season with a total of 24 points.

The ‘B’ Team (under the captaincy of Arthur McCormick) was playing in Division 3. There were 8 teams in this division and consequently there were a total of 14 matches to be played during the course of the season. Of these: 5 matches were won, no matches were drawn and 9 matches were lost. The team finished the season low in the division with a total of 20½ points out of a possible maximum of 56 points. The division was won this year by Adastral Park ‘B’ who finished the season with a total of 43 points.

The club also entered a team into the Suffolk Chess U125 Competition this season; this team was also under the captaincy of Andrew Paige. We were unsuccessful in this competition being defeated by Woodbridge School in our first match.

Another competition the club entered this year was the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup. This team was also under the captaincy of Andrew Paige; however, the unavailability of players for our first match rendered us unable to compete in this competition. The competition was won by Ipswich Chess Club who defeated Norfolk & Norwich Chess Club in the final (3½ – 2½).

Another local competition is the Suffolk League Cup; however, the club did not enter a team into this competition for this season. This competition was won by Sudbury Chess Club who defeated Adastral Park in the final.

The Club Championship this year was organised by Andrew Paige and was in the form of a one-day Tournament: the competition was won jointly by David Brown and John Feavyour. The Club Championship for last year (2006 – 2007) was organised both by Alan Naysmith and Andrew Paige (the result was not announced before because the competition was not completed at the time that the last Secretary's Report was written): this competition was won by John Feavyour.

The club again held a Quickplay Tournament this year. This tournament was held on Tuesday 18 September 2007 at the Benhall & Sternfield Ex-Servicemen's Club and was organised by John Feavyour. The Tournament had five entrants and was won by Don Picton.

Finally, the club was again able to enjoy another Christmas Dinner this year. This event was held on Thursday 13 December 2007 at The Butcher's Arms (Knodishall), and Alan Naysmith deserves thanks for organising this event.
