SAXMUNDHAM & DISTRICT CHESS CLUB

Secretary's Report: Season 2005 - 2006

This season (2005-2006) the Suffolk Chess League consisted of three divisions and the club entered one team into the league (in Division One); this team was under the captaincy of Andrew Paige. There were six teams in the division and there was both a home and an away fixture against each team; consequently there were ten matches to play over the course of the season. Of these matches we won one, drew one and lost eight finishing the season at the bottom of the division with 7½ points out of a possible maximum of 40 points. The division was won this year by Ipswich ‘A’ who finished the season with 27½ points.

In past years we have been able to enter more than one team into the Suffolk Chess League and hopefully it will eventually be possible for us to do so again.

The club also entered a team into the Suffolk Chess U125 Competition this season; this team was also under the captaincy of Andrew Paige (this is a knock-out competition in which each team consists of four players); this season there were nine teams entered into the competition. Last year (2004-2005) we were very successful by winning this trophy after defeating Clacton Chess Club in the final, however this year (2005-2006) we were unsuccessful being defeated by Stowmarket Chess Club in our first match of the competition. This competition was won by Bury Cannons who defeated Stowmarket in the final.

Another local competition in which the Club competed this year was the Suffolk League Cup (this is a new competition), this team was, again, under the captaincy of Andrew Paige; however we were unsuccessful in this competition.

Another local competition is the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup (this is a knock out competition in which each team consists of six players), however, the club did not enter a team into this competition for this season.

There was no Suffolk County Swiss Tournament this year.

The Club Championship for this season (2005-2006) has been organised by Alan Naysmith and there have been seven entrants. This competition has been in the form of a double round knock-out competition with each player alternately having the white and black pieces: this tournament has not yet been completed and, consequently, there is no result which is currently available.

Finally, the Club Championship results for both of the two previous seasons are now available; these had not been announced before because the competitions had not yet been completed at the time that the last Secretary's Report was written. The results of these competitions are listed as follows:

  • Season (2003-2004) the Club Championship was won by John Feavyour who defeated Andrew Paige in the final.
  • Season (2004-2005) the Club Championship was also won by John Feavyour who again defeated Andrew Paige in the final.
