SAXMUNDHAM & DISTRICT CHESS CLUB
Secretary's Report: Season 2004 - 2005
This season, the club entered one team in the Suffolk Chess League (in Division One); this was under the captaincy of Alan Naysmith. We were unsuccessful this year finishing at the bottom of the division immediately below Clacton A. The division was won this year by Bury Cannons.
Another competition in which the club competed this year was the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup: this is a knock-out competition in which each team consists of six players. This team was also under the captaincy of Alan Naysmith, but we had a further lack of success being defeated by Bury Cannons in our first match.
Additionally, the Club entered a team into the Suffolk Chess U125 Competition this season; this team was also under the captaincy of Alan Naysmith: this is a knock-out competition in which each team consists of four players. We were successful in this competition and have won the cup after defeating Clacton Chess Club in the final. This is the second year in succession that we have won this competition, last year we defeated Stowmarket Chess Club in the final.
Another local competition is the Suffolk County Swiss Tournament; however, the club did not enter a team into this competition this year.
The Club Championship for this year (2004-2005) was organised by Andrew Paige and there were four entrants, the competition taking the form of a double round knock-out as last year: this tournament has yet to be completed and therefore no result is currently available. The Club Championship for last year (2003-2004) was also organised by Andrew Paige and there were six entrants: this competition also has yet to be completed and, consequently, the result is still not known.
This year the club held a Tournament of in honour of Jack Revell who died in a motor vehicle accident last year. Jack was our Club President and was a founder member of the club: he gave the club great service making a significant contribution to its organisation throughout the club's history. This tournament was held on 29 March 2005 and was organised by Andrew Paige; it had five entrants and was in the form of an All-Play-All. The tournament was won by John Feavyour.
Every available opportunity to advertise the club should be taken. During October last year, the Saxmundham Town Council organised a festival which included an event which they called a Club Expo; this enabled local clubs and societies to set up a stall in order to advertise themselves. This Club Expo was held at the Market Hall (Saxmundham) on 30 October 2004 and the Chess Club had a stall; hopefully there will be further such opportunities publicise the club in the future.
Finally, it is with very great sadness that I must inform you of the loss of John Watson who died last September (2004). Over the years, John has made a significant contribution to the club in an organisational capacity serving the club as a Match Captain for a great many years. John will be greatly missed.
